Before you start rolling your eyes, there are some great reasons why CrossFit can be a great addition to a runner's routine.

It's clear that runners (especially amateur runners) can reap great benefits from some strength training. Study after study confirms that a full body routine that builds posterior and core strength will make runners more durable and faster. The challenge is that runners often don't know where to learn how to properly do a deadlift, front squat, cleans, push press or put them all together in a workout. These are techniques that a good CrossFit gym can help runners master.

As a runner who has found such a gym, it's worth it. I'm working out with other people training to be athletes. We've got coaches keeping an eye on our technique and correcting us to make sure that we're getting the most from each workout and staying injury free. And just like running groups, we get to know eachother, push eachother and enjoy workouts together.

CrossFit will never make me or any runner look like a body builder. That's not our goal. For that matter, that's not Crossfit's goal either. What it will do is make us stronger, healthier and more durable runners. As a side affect, we'll also look like stronger runners.

To find a good CrossFit, give a few of the local CrossFit gyms in your area. Tell them that you're a runner and you're wanting to utilize CrossFit as an addition to your running. You'll need some coaching on proper lifting techniques and some help scaling workouts so that you can sufficiently recover for your running workouts.

If they're a good gym, they'll likely invite you in to talk to you more about your current fitness. They'll put you through a variety of screening movements to identify any limitations you may have. If you're interested, sign up and give it a go. If you don't get the impression that they're interested in you as an athlete, then move on to the next gym.
